We took a quick inspiration from Lion King and made it extra cute for kids as African animal masks! Who doesn’t love Lion King! Everyone loves this Disney Renaissance classic released all the way back on June 15, 1994. For their upcoming release anniversary, I wanted to create some character masks inspired by Lion King. Lion King has a fantastic cast of personalities, you can tell because you can’t actually hate any of Lion King’s characters 🙂 They are so well-developed, especially for a children’s franchise. We have a love story, a succession story, a coming of age tale and let’s not forget everything Pumbaa and Timon bought to the movie alone.
If your kids want to continue with the story on their own, print out these free Lion King masks and give them a chance to make their imaginations go wild!

Lion King Inspired DIY Character Face Masks
Masks are great for creative directed play. Kids have to think about the character they’re playing and come up with (on the spot) what their character would say and do. If you want some prompts to costume play, I’ll add some below.
We have all the fan favorites of the Lion King cast: Timon, Pumba, Scar, Rafiki, Hyenas (Shenzi, Banzai, and Ed), Sarabi/Nala, and of course – Simba! (Zazu’s under construction. He won’t fit on 1 sheet of paper so I’m trying to figure out how to get that to a workable size.)
🦁 Tips & Instructions:
- Select and print out your favorite Lion King mask below. You can also save a PDF to print later by clicking the print button and saving it as a PDF.
- All images are vertical and the measurements (for example, holes for eyes) should match up to an average child’s face between the age of 5 to 13.
- You can print this template on anything but thicker material would be best for face masks, like cardstock.
- After you print it out, cut out your character mask. Are you making a hands-free mask? Then leave the mask has handles (dashed tabs) on both sides attached when you cut out the mask.
- Test and align the size of your character mask to see if it’s a good fit. Some masks are naturally bigger, some are smaller so make your adjustments.
- Now check measurements for the eye holes.
- Cut out the eye holes marked by the dashed lines. You can use an circle cutting tool; or gently fold the mask in half, create a light crease and use a scissor to snip a small opening and then completely cut out the dashed circle.
- Color the mask and color it in. The color is up to you really but if kiddos want to go traditional, you can easily find Lion King images online. Personally, I think it’s more fun to get creative 😉
- On some pages, there are handle tabs on both sides of the masks for you to string a string or cord through.
- Are you making a handheld mask? Trim the side tabs off and make the handle by using a popsicle stick, or skewer, or folding a piece of paper multiple times like an accordion and taping it all together.
Note: Nala/Sarabi/Kiara are exchangeable. Well Disney made them look very similar so when I did the masks, I could barely tell the difference and only uploaded one. Soooo, hakuna matata! ^_^
