It’s spiraling that naturally form a thick “rounded shape, much like a cloud or puff ball.”
Are you wondering why we chose to draw an afro and created this tutorial for kids?
Because it’s important to address why many children draw the same hair when there are so many types, textures, colors, and styles of hair. It’s usually very short for boys…long and straight for girls.
You see this artistic repetition – A LOT – especially between the grades of K-2. You see the same line formation, same shapes, the same concept repeated OVER and OVER until it becomes stereotypical.
In a small unfortunate way, it is totally normal. Having peer groups and social circles is important. Fitting in is important.
BUT the problem arises when you’re talking about the core lesson being taught to kids who internalizes social concepts like what is the accepted norm for hair. Hint, there should not be “norm” for hair!
Let’s teach our kids and encourage them to try to draw what’s unfamiliar, diverse, different – so they can practice, widen their world, and gain artistic confidence.
🖍️ Tools For Success
- Paper (Our Free How To Draw Template PDF)
- Pencil
- Polymer Eraser
- Outline Markers
- Coloring Tools (I recommend Crayola’s 140 Piece Coloring Case)
🎨 Parents: The only tools you need to use these how-to-draw tutorials are: an eraser, a pencil, and a piece of paper. But – if you have them around – a sketching pencil makes for fainter and softer lines that help kids build fine motor accuracy. I also recommend going over the sketch pencil with a black outline marker when you’re done for a neater finish. Lastly, erase the pencil marks before adding color.
