🎨 Parents: The only tools you need to use these how-to-draw tutorials are: an eraser, a pencil, and a piece of paper. But – if you have them around – a sketching pencil makes for fainter and softer lines that help kids build fine motor accuracy. I also recommend going over the sketch pencil with a black outline marker when you’re done for a neater finish. Lastly, erase the pencil marks before adding color.
Step-by-Step Guide on How to Draw Wavy Hair
Drawing wavy hair is easy. The only thing you need is practice, practice, practice. For young kids with growing motor skills, before starting, they can practice the wavy strokes horizontally before going vertical. It’s important to remember no wavy head of hair has the exact same waves. It’s actually very important to add a little volume, a little different to each of the wavy strands so the hair doesn’t appear fake. Like hair, having diversity is beautiful and natural!
- Imagine a woman’s face in a side view position, then draw it in a “crescent moon-like” shape. Make sure that the face in the side view position has a slightly curved forehead, a pointed nose, curved lips, and a pointed chin.
- On the right side of the woman’s face, draw wavy strands of hair. Have you seen ripple waves in water or beachy oceans? Just like that. You can make short or long wavy strands depending on how you like to present wavy hair. Some wavy hairs are looser and some tighter. That means the waves may be closer to each other or further.
- Also, draw as many hair strands as you can – thick or thin hair depends on you.
- We have 6 total sections of hair in alternating colors. It would take very long to draw individual strands so doing it our way using alternating sections “tricks” our brain into seeing wavy hair at only a fraction of the effort!
- The hair strands should be curvy on top of the head with pointy hair strands on end. This makes it more realistic because our hairs often come down in sharp sheared points (done by hairstylists.)
- Alternate dark and light orange hair strands…actually we chose a bright ginger blonde shade but you can choose any skin color and hair color – the creativity is up to you!

Interesting Facts about Wavy Hair
- There are 120,000 hairs on the average head of hair, while a head with wavy hair only has 100,000. But wavy hair still looks full because of the waves.
- Although it can be hard to brush when you have wavy hair because thick and wavy hair makes it easier to snarl than straight hair, new innovative combs, creams, soaps, and tons of hair products have come on the market so wavy hair can have the best of both worlds when it comes to hair.
- People with wavy hair don’t have to “shampoo” as much, although this is not universal, there are not as many hair follicles/less sebaceous glands so that their scalps are not as sticky as a straight person with hair.
- Wavy hair makes the oils released from hair follicles and scalp harder to transport from the top of the head to the tip because the oil has to go around the waves and rings. Some wavy hairs are drier because of this; but on the flip side, straight hair gets too greasy quicker since oil moves through to the tip and gives straight hair a matter look.
- Typically, wavy hair grows about six inches a year.
- An estimated 65 percent of the U.S. population has curly, coily, or wavy hair, with their natural hair embracing a rising proportion of textured-hair women.
- Did you know, according to a survey, if women could pick their natural hairstyle, almost 80 percent of women would want to wake up with wavy hair!
- Wavy hair can shrink by up to 5%, curly hair can shrink by up to 30%, and oily hair can shrink by up to 75% of its actual length.
- If you have fine wavy hair, sometimes it can end up frizzy after styling. Setting on cold on your blow dryer can help.
- Approximately 90% of wavy hair is in the rising portion while the other 10% is in the resting era. The means of it can grow quickly much of the time, but a few percent require time to grow correctly.
