Why is it mandatory to kiss under a plant? This plant is also called the devil’s fuge and it has some pretty alarming properties! Mistletoe is an evergreen shrub with oval leaves all year and waxy berries. It is parasitic and thus toxic to its host. They are also very hard to get rid of. But mistletoe has become a part of the local environments, and many species depend on it to live. It’s also central to our Christmas culture, so let’s draw a mistletoe!

🖍️ Tools For Success
- Paper (Our Free How To Draw Template PDF)
- Pencil
- Polymer Eraser
- Outline Markers
- Coloring Tools (I recommend Crayola’s 140 Piece Coloring Case)
🎨 Parents: The only tools you need to use these how-to-draw tutorials are: an eraser, a pencil, and a piece of paper. But – if you have them around – a sketching pencil makes for fainter and softer lines that help kids build fine motor accuracy. I also recommend going over the sketch pencil with a black outline marker when you’re done for a neater finish. Lastly, erase the pencil marks before adding color.

Fun Facts About Mistletoe for Kids
- Mistletoe, also known as an obligate hemiparasite, belongs to the Santalales order (Santalales like…Santa!)
- Mistletoe can be found in the UK, Spain, Portugal, Morocco, and southern Africa in various forms. Viscum, a genus that was originally native to the British Isles, was introduced to North America and now thrives there.
- Because it is evergreen and survives when other plants lose their leaves, this plant has been associated with fertility and life since the Middle Ages.
- Mistletoe was first hung on doorways by the Romans, who thought it symbolized unity, knowledge, and devotion, as well as protection from witches and malevolent demons.
- Mistletoe was said to have resurrected the god Baldur in Norse mythology, and the god Frigg, seeing it as a symbol of love, declared that he would kiss anyone who passed beneath it.
- Hawthorn, poplar, and lime tree branches are favored by mistletoe. The apple tree is the most popular mistletoe host in the UK! Since it prefers bright light, it is seldom found in the dark.
- To get rid of mistletoe, simply cut off the branches where it is growing. Smaller branches should be pruned as soon as signs of mistletoe emerge, or the branch should be cut off at the trunk if it has gone too far.
- Mistletoe grows on the roots of trees and shrubs. Phoradendron, Greek for “wood robber,” is the genus name for North America’s oak mistletoe, which is by far the most widespread plant in the eastern United States.
