The excitement of the constant pounding of water makes you realize how truly impressive and powerful water is. Who wouldn’t want to draw a majestic waterfall? They are exciting to look at! Like clouds, there are different types of waterfalls, 10 total waterfalls are classified. Waterfalls are typically divided based on volume of water, width, and/or height. We’re drawing a traditional, universally recognizable “ledge” waterfall today. It’s shorter and thinner than the plunge and block. Only partially do ledge waterfalls touches the bedrock. Here’s a quick graphic about the other main times of waterfalls before we start. You can make your waterfall YOUR own and choose your favorite style!

🖍️ Tools For Success
- Paper (Our Free How To Draw Template PDF)
- Pencil
- Polymer Eraser
- Outline Markers
- Coloring Tools (I recommend Crayola’s 140 Piece Coloring Case)
🎨 Parents: The only tools you need to use these how-to-draw tutorials are: an eraser, a pencil, and a piece of paper. But – if you have them around – a sketching pencil makes for fainter and softer lines that help kids build fine motor accuracy. I also recommend going over the sketch pencil with a black outline marker when you’re done for a neater finish. Lastly, erase the pencil marks before adding color.
Learn To Draw Waterfall Step By Step
- Draw two big oval-like land formations parallel to each other in a vertical position. You can create a short distance between them or a longer one, depending on how you like it.
- Between the land formations, draw a straight horizontal water edge on top and two wavy water splashes at the bottom parallel to each other. The wavy-curved water splash at the bottom will look like tiny long clouds, so the more irregularities, the better.
- Draw four slightly curved vertical lines to create waterfalls between the land formations.
- Beneath the land formations and waterfalls, draw two curved water flows parallel to each other with three irregularities for each curved line: the bigger irregularity, the better.
- Land formations are usually brown in appearance, and water bodies appear blue as the sky reflects on them. Color the waterfalls and the inner water flow with a lighter shade of blue, while the outer water flows with a darker shade, the water splash at the bottom of the waterfalls white, and the land formation brown.
Fun Facts About Waterfalls
- Waterfalls seem peaceful and beautiful in their natural setting but once you turn on the noise, you see the power. Waterfalls are a strong source of hydroelectric power and reckless behavior of some who are daredevils.
- Every waterfall is different – just like snow or human fingerprints!
- Waterfalls can be manmade, the largest artificial waterfall in the world is Cascata delle Marmore, made by Ancient Romans in Italy. It has a height of 541 feet.
- The reason why waterfalls are so dangerous is that the water hits the bedrock below, and if you go off a waterfall, so will you and it’s very deadly. Also, other rocks that fall with the waterfall can land above you too.
- Waterfalls bring in local economies a steady income. It’s estimated over 30 million people visit Niagara Falls every year.
