How To Draw a Cartoon Kissing Face Expression for Little Kids

How To Draw a Cartoon Kissing Face Expression for Little Kids

Real talk, WHO gives the best kisses? Grandma or auntie? Correct answer: the dog. Hahaha, well that’s our family’s joke 🙂 Kissing is a universal endearing action of pure affection and love. The stuck-out duck lip, closed eyes face we make when we’re going in for a kiss is universal even though no one teaches us the “face” for kissing. Wouldn’t it be weird if someone went in for a kiss with their eyes wide open?

So today we’re going to learn about drawing overt facial expressions! (Like kissing!) It’s not easy drawing human expressions – even professional artists and Pixar animators struggle with this every day. Conveying expressions is a really difficult art form to master. It’s OK, practice practice practice! We can get started by going simple with this easy-peasy tutorial great for young ones! How can we convey an action like kissing with a drawing? 🖍️ Tools For Success

🎨 Parents: The only tools you need to use these how-to-draw tutorials are: an eraser, a pencil, and a piece of paper. But – if you have them around – a sketching pencil makes for fainter and softer lines that help kids build fine motor accuracy. I also recommend going over the sketch pencil with a black outline marker when you’re done for a neater finish. Lastly, erase the pencil marks before adding color.

How To Doodle a Kissing Expression

Human expressions can range from subtle to very clear. Kissing is a very specific action that comes with a specific expression we do on auto-pilot. Kissing is done most of the time with 1) eyes closed, 2) leaning in/direction, and 3) narrowing/puckering lips in the center towards whoever will be smooched.

Don’t overthink it! We can draw this expression as long as we have just these 3 features and then the audience will automatically fill in the blanks. Our brains are very smart that way, the brain makes tons of connections, short-cuts, and inferences that tell us exactly what it is even though nothing has been stated.

The only other big clue, if you noticed, there’s a floating heart. That’s how we sort of draw kissing in popular culture, using a floating heart symbol. Facial expressions don’t have to be the only thing that clues an expression or mood – especially in cartoons because cartoons get too simple. You can add clues to the overall mood with inferences, heart means love, skull means poison or death, flush means shyness, etc. Keep these things in mind and you’ll have no trouble conveying complex expressions!
